Castles In Europe by James Reese Europe
Arranged by Daniel Leavitt
The Castles
As you get to know the music of James Reese Europe you will notice quite a few rags, marches and waltzes with the word "Castle" in the title. This is an homage that Europe was paying to Irene and Vernon Castle. The Castles were both born in the late 19th c. and became the fashionista power couple of the early 20th c. People wanted to dress like the Castles and especially dance the dances that they saw Irene and Vernon cut a rug to in early motion pictures. James Reese Europe and his Clef Club Orchestra were hired numerous times by the Castles to perform for their dance performances and soirées. The Castles commishoned many works of James Reese Europe and his writing parnter, pianist Noble Sissle.
The Castle House Rag was composed in around 1914 by James Reese Europe and the Clef Club Orchestra.
Some not to be forgotten history of James Reese Europe and his Harlem Hell Fighters band.
